On Sunday, Reading Rainbow had set a new record in crowdfunding campaigns. With over 105,000 backers for its Kickstarter campaign by Monday, it shattered the old record by nearly 15,000 backers. The campaign has raised more than $5.5 million for its project to create a web version of the show.
Their goal was to raise $ 1 million. They reached that mark in one day.
The internet, with the help of social media, is changing the way people are able to fundraise. Crowdfunding has become one of the most popular ways to raise money for causes, people and projects. In the past, fundraising involved expensive advertising, elaborate benefit events, and lots of volunteer resources. Now, with just a touch of a button, a campaign can come to life.
In Omaha, there is a campaign to help a local family attain life-saving medical treatment for their daughter who must go to Italy in order to receive the care she needs. To save their daughter’s life, the Price family will do whatever they must in order to get their daughter, Cecelia, to Italy. Friends and family have gathered around them to support and encourage them during this difficult time. With the family’s GoFundMe page nearly a third of the way toward their goal, friends and family are using social media to help their cause.
When it comes to crowdfunding, there are some components that make some campaigns more successful than others. If you are thinking of starting your own crowdfunding campaign, keep these tips in mind:
1. Have a trustworthy cause. Drawing upon the popularity of the children’s show, Reading Rainbow was able to establish itself as trusted recipient of donations. While not all campaigns have over 30 years of television viewers to support them, it’s still important to establish the credibility of the person, organization or cause. People love to give to worthy causes. With a secure crowdfunding platform, even small causes can garner success.
2. Be transparent. People want to know where the money they donate will be used. Cecelia is a triplet and will be traveling to Italy with her Mom, triplet brothers, older sister Adelina, and two helpers. It’s not hard to imagine where the funds will go while they are in a foreign country for four months.
3. Utilize Social Media. In order to get the word out about your campaign, tell your friends, and do it on Facebook and Twitter. If your campaign resonates with your friends and family, they will share it.
4. Don’t forget traditional avenues. A group of friends organized a fireworks stand and some of the kids organized a lemonade stand to help the Price family reach their goal. Traditional methods are a wonderful way to supplement a crowdfunding cause. Especially for those campaigns that may not have a huge following on social media.
While this is not an exhaustive list for a successful crowdfunding campaign, it’s a good start for anyone thinking of utilizing that method to raise money. And if you’re in Omaha, swing by 84th and Giles for some fireworks and support #SavingCecelia.
