Tips: Creating News
As the economy has slowed, many companies have turned to publicity as a cost-effective marketing tool. Publicity can generate buzz that advertising dollars can't buy.
Below are some tips on how to create "news" to attract positive media coverage for your company:
- Give back to the community through volunteerism or philanthropic projects. Many television news programs have "good news" features.
- Tie into events of the day such as the economy. For example, one Omaha, Nebraska, company made headlines recently by giving its employees $50 cash bonuses to be spent in the local economy.
- Do something out of the ordinary. For example, employees from a Council Bluffs, Iowa, business received press for creating a huge "Freedom! Thank You!" sign in an empty field next to Offutt Air Force Base.
- Be first at something. The media will notice true innovators.
- Win an award. Companies who are recognized by outside parties, such as trade organizations, often receive press for their accomplishments.
- Change direction. The business pages, in particular, are interested in companies that are launching new programs or products.
- Conduct a public opinion poll.
