Tips: Press Releases

A well-crafted press release provides the foundation for a successful publicity campaign. Below are press release tips for success.

  1. Make sure you have legitimate news to tell. Something that may be important to your company or organization may not always be "news" to the media.
  2. Put the news in the lead (the first paragraph) of the press release.
  3. Answer all of the obvious questions in the release (who? what? when? why?).
  4. Use short sentences and short paragraphs. Editors' time is limited so you should use concise, crisp language.
  5. Substantiate your claims with facts and figures whenever possible.
  6. Get their attention. If appropriate be creative in how you package your release. For instance, if you are announcing a new restaurant, you might want to have a food sample delivered with the release.
  7. Include a contact person's name and telephone number so the media
know whom to call if they are interested in pursuing a story.
