Tips: Press Releases
A well-crafted press release provides the foundation for a successful publicity campaign. Below are press release tips for success.
- Make sure you have legitimate news to tell. Something that may be important to your company or organization may not always be "news" to the media.
- Put the news in the lead (the first paragraph) of the press release.
- Answer all of the obvious questions in the release (who? what? when? why?).
- Use short sentences and short paragraphs. Editors' time is limited so you should use concise, crisp language.
- Substantiate your claims with facts and figures whenever possible.
- Get their attention. If appropriate be creative in how you package your release. For instance, if you are announcing a new restaurant, you might want to have a food sample delivered with the release.
- Include a contact person's name and telephone number so the media
know whom to call if they are interested in pursuing a story.
