College grads need more than a diploma
Recent college graduates are entering the job market armed with freshly-minted degrees but with few solid career prospects.
While the job search can be long and frustrating, there are things budding PR professionals can do to sharpen their skills and increase their chances for employment.
• Volunteer at a nonprofit organization
Almost always in need of help, nonprofits can provide recent grads with an opportunity to give back to their communities and gain valuable experience. Offer to help with events, media relations and other activities that will beef up a resume.
• Become or remain active on the social media front
Today’s PR professionals must have a strong working knowledge of various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and You Tube. Learn as much as possible about each platform and post regularly.
• Start a blog
Strong writing skills can set one applicant apart from all others, so don’t let them get rusty. Personal blogs are great outlets for creative thinking and writing – and, if done correctly, an online portfolio that can be shown to prospective employers.
Most importantly, make sure all of your personal pages, posts and tweets are appropriate. Future employers may be following, so don’t write anything you wouldn’t want them to see.
